Joe Welch, Alex Prichard, and Matt Macander are summarizing research on Alaskan marmot (Marmota broweri) distribution, including known colony locations and habitat characteristics, and are modeling potential marmot habitat on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management Central Yukon Field Office. Initial models will focus on identifying boulder fields and talus slopes adjacent to alpine meadows and arctic tundra. Slope and other terrain metrics will also be applied, and a skilled photo-interpreter will review a stratified subset of the initial results, to verify the validity of the classifications.
