Land Rehabilitation in Nunavut

Sue Bishop and Tim Cater provided a field sampling protocol for collecting soil samples and monitoring vegetation at tundra sites affected by brine spills at the Hope Bay Mine in Nunavut, Canada. Sue also developed a preliminary rehabilitation plan for tundra affected by brine spills at the request of the mine operator, Agnico Eagle Ltd. Tim and Isabel Eaton used the protocols at spill sites during their visit to Hope Bay in August 2024. The results from monitoring affected tundra will be used to finalize the rehabilitation plan and to assist in planning for any future brine spills. ABR field teams will continue to monitor spill sites for several more years to assess recovery of soils and vegetation.
