Hawaiian Petrel (‘ua’u) Surveys Near the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, Haleakala, Maui

ABR conducted paired surveillance radar and visual surveys to determine movement patterns and flight altitudes of Hawaiian Petrels near the summit of Haleakala. Endangered Hawaiian Petrels or 'Ua'u (Pterodroma sandwichensis) breed only in the Main Hawaiian Islands; the center of nesting abundance is near the summit of Haleakala, on Maui Island. In 2004 and 2005, ABR conducted paired surveillance radar and visual surveys in the same area for the US Air Force Maui Space Surveillance Complex (MSSC). The FEIS for the new Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope stipulated that a repeat survey be conducted, similar to that for the MSSC, to compare with the historical baseline provided by the original surveys. ABR replicated the previous radar and visual surveys at Haleakala summit in May 2019  to assess any effects of the additional structures on petrel movements near the nesting colony.
