Oil Spill Response

ABR has the experience and expertise to respond rapidly to at-sea oil spills to assess initial impacts and to help prioritize clean up and habitat protection strategies. We also have >25 years of experience designing and implementing monitoring programs to assess long-term impacts and the recovery of biological resources following a spill. We have published >25 journal articles and book chapters on the Exxon Valdez oil spill alone, covering a diversity of topics including impacts and recovery of seabirds, waterbirds, shorebirds, raptors, sea otters, other marine mammals, and the habitats that support wildlife and other marine organisms. Many of these papers emphasized how to design monitoring studies and analytical techniques that hold up under litigation-sensitive conditions. Our specific areas of expertise include:

  • Rapid response to at-sea oil spills to assess acute impacts and guide habitat protection efforts
  • Design and implementation of studies to assess long-term impacts and recovery of wildlife and their habitats
  • Species-specific studies focused on endangered species and species of conservation concern
  • Subject matter experts for review of issues pertaining to marine birds and mammals
  • Litigation support
