Steller Sea Lion and Harbor Seal Monitoring for Ftx-03 Launch, Kodiak Launch Complex

Steller Sea Lion and Harbor Seal Monitoring for Ftx-03 Launch, Kodiak Launch Complex

ABR monitored endangered Steller sea lions and harbor seals for R&M Consulting and the Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation. The monitoring evaluated changes in abundance and use of haulouts during rocket launches at the Kodiak Launch Complex near Narrow Cape, Kodiak Island, Alaska. ABR conducted aerial surveys for sea lions and harbor seals and other marine mammals before and after rocket launches in 2006-2011.  One to three aerial surveys were conducted before the launch and three surveys were conducted post-launch, so that changes in sea lion and harbor seal numbers in the area could be evaluated with respect to the rocket launch.  ABR collaborated with Michael Minor and Associates to monitor noise in conjunction with simultaneous video-taping of sea lion or harbor seal haulouts on Ugak Island to correlate rocket noise with behavior at the haulout.  Monitoring of Steller sea lions was required for permits under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and monitoring of harbor seals was conducted at the request of National Marine Fisheries Service. 2006-2011.
