Seabird and Marine Mammal Surveys in Kotzebue Sound

Seabird and Marine Mammal Surveys in Kotzebue Sound

The Science Program of the Northwest Arctic Borough (NAB) is collecting data to inform policy and management decisions regarding food security, resource development, and infrastructure. ABR conducted boat-based surveys of seabirds and marine mammals to fill gaps in current understanding of how upper-trophic-level predators use the marine environment in Kotzebue Sound. We described spatial and temporal distributions of seabirds and marine mammals; characterized predator community composition; and documented habitat use by species of interest for conservation and/or subsistence. In addition to surveys, we also developed a smartphone app for Borough residents to collect incidental observations of marine wildlife.
