Radar Surveys to Determine Potential Impacts to Listed Seabirds at the Proposed Molokai Irrigation District Hydropower Plant.

ABR conducted a 10-day survey for Hawaiian Petrels and Newell’s Shearwaters during summer 2014 at the proposed Molokai Irrigation District Hydropower Plant. ABR used standard methods (visual, surveillance radar, and vertical radar) we developed for determining presence, passage rates and flight altitudes of these federally listed Hawaiian seabirds. The primary objectives were to use radar and visual techniques to: (1) collect baseline information on flight directions, passage rates, and flight altitudes of petrels and shearwaters over the project site and (2) estimate annual fatality rates of petrels and shearwaters at a proposed transmission line at the project.
