Chukchi Sea Environmental Studies Program

Chukchi Sea Environmental Studies Program

The CSESP is a multidisciplinary baseline environmental study to support permitting for oil and gas exploration jointly funded by ConocoPhillips, Statoil, and Shell. Dr. Robert Day serves as the Chief Scientist of the program responsible for the overall design of sampling and coordination among the 9 disciplines: physical oceanography, ocean acidification, contaminants sampling, plankton ecology, benthic ecology, fish ecology, seabird ecology, and marine-mammal ecology and acoustics. He and Co-PI Adrian Gall are the Principal Investigators for the seabird ecology component, which integrates data from the other disciplines to examine the factors that influence the distribution and abundance of the seabird community in the northeastern Chukchi Sea. This study provides valuable information for regulatory agencies to evaluate and manage the impacts of oil and gas exploration activities. In addition, the publicly-available data and peer-reviewed journal articles contribute to the understanding of the Chukchi marine ecosystem.
