Geomorphology Studies of Permafrost Development for the
Alpine Satellite Development Program, Northeastern National
Petroleum Reserve–Alaska (2002–2005)
Client: ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc.
ABR designed a geomorphology study to provide pre-development
baseline data on permafrost characteristics in the Alpine Satellite
Development Program (ASDP) study area (northeastern National
Petroleum Reserve–Alaska [NPRA]) in support of permit applications
and impact assessments. Specific objectives were to 1) determine the
abundance and distribution of ice wedges in relation to geomorphic units
that have been mapped in the study area; 2) determine ice-wedge
stability by sampling active-layer characteristics above ice wedges; 3)
revise integrated-terrain-unit-map codes for the ASDP, Colville, and
parts of Kuparuk to ensure consistency among maps, and recode ITUs
in the Fish Creek Delta to wildlife habitats; 4) lead a summer education
program on coastal dynamics with students from the native village of
Nuiqsut; and 5) submit a manuscript summarizing results of the
permafrost study for journal publication. For more information, contact
