STATUS:  Seasonal positions (appointments may range 3–5 months)

JOB SUMMARY: ABR is seeking an Aquatic Ecology biologist (Field Crew Lead) and technicians (2) to assist with fishery, aquatic ecology, and water quality projects in streams and lakes throughout Alaska.


  • Conduct field surveys for aquatic habitat and invertebrates in freshwater environments
  • Assist in field mobilization and demobilization, including managing field gear, to support field work
  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy
  • Assist project managers with data entry and management
  • Process field samples in the laboratory and maintain Chain of Custody documentation

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience conducting field surveys using a variety of aquatic sampling techniques and expertise in fish identification is desired. Candidates with a background in aquatic macroinvertebrate collections/identification, water quality studies, or experience with stream habitat and/or hydrology surveys will be given higher consideration. The applicant must be able to conduct field work involving wading and significant physical labor in remote settings; must be able to carry up to 50 lbs and work 10–12 hours per day during deployment. Traveling in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, on snowmobiles, and in boats will be required. Experience in data entry is required. The applicant must have strong organization skills; and be able to work independently and as part of a team. A valid driver’s license and a minimum of 2 years undergraduate experience is requested; a B.S. in the aquatic sciences (fisheries biology, aquatic ecology/zoology, or related fields) is preferred.

WORK PERIOD: June –August 2020, with possibility for longer term through November 2020 (as dictated by available workload).  Field deployments may require as many as 21 days of consecutive work.

WAGE: Depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
